John Patrick Shanley (Moonstruck) adapted and directed his controversial Pulitzer prize-winning stage play about the conflict between an amiable priest and a hard-line nun, who is convinced of the priest's inappropriate relationship with a twelve-year-old boy. Absolutely delightful adaptation of Alan Menkin and Howard Ashman's smash off-Broadway hit that was, in turn, based on a low-budget Jack Nicholson film. The music is infectiously, toe-tappingly Motownesque and the recreation of Skid Row is a masterpiece of the production designer's art.
